Despite Tebow’s ever-popular fourth-quarter comebacks, the Pittsburgh Steelers managed to drive the game into overtime, only to lose 29-23 to the Broncos.
This was the first game that went into overtime ever since the National Football League set their new rules that allowed for overtime in playoff games. The rule included the provision that the game would end even if only one team had possession of the ball, as long as that team managed to score a touchdown.
Indeed, it was again Tebow who completed the 20-yard pass which was turned into an 80-yard touchdown by teammate Demaryius Thomas, ending in sweet victory over the Steelers off in the AFC wildcard game.
It seemed all the more fitting that Tebow turned that rule on its head, especially given how Broncos executive John Elway had commented last week that Tebow would need to “pull the trigger.”
Conventional wisdom has always been left scratching her head as Tebow defied everything imaginable in offensive football, and this game’s miracle was no exception.
After the game with the Steelers, the Broncos are now left facing up to the New England Patriots this Saturday night in an ironic twist of events. The Patriots had apparently begun the three-game slip that almost lost the Broncos a berth at the playoffs; from there, the team announced on Sunday that they were hiring the man who drafted Tebow into the Broncos, Josh McDaniels, who had lost his job prior to Tebow’s rise to fame, albeit of a controversial degree.
Last month, the Patriots won over the Broncos 41-23. After the game, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was found meeting Tebow at midfield, telling him that the Patriots would meet with the Broncos again.
With a smile, Tebow quipped that Brady was a prophet in saying that, possibly giving a quick reference to his publicly proclaimed Christian faith.
Of course, nobody would dare laugh at Tebow as a quarterback now, especially following the 316 yards he threw against the top-ranked defense in the league, making for an average of 31.6 yards for each of the 10 completed passes.
Tebow’s success has remained highly under speculation, attributed by many to fluke plays, awesome timing, or inexplicable good luck. After all, although he had rallied to win five games from the time he became his team’s starting quarterback, his throwing motion was apparently a mess and his field vision blurred. In fact, he had been especially awful throughout the losing streak that spanned three games. In fact, it had been so bad during the week prior to this game that fans were already speculating if Coach John Fox would decide to use Brady Quinn instead of Tebow.
Of course, that did not happen on Sunday, and Tebow stood strong as the better choice for quarterback, without a single sack or interception, but taking advantage of the defense.
Interestingly, the first thing he said crossed his mind as he watched Thomas slip through the safeties of the Steelers was “Thank you Lord.”
